I had heard Derek's Black Utopia before but nothing had sticked then. Now it reminded me a lot of John Petrucci's Suspended Animation but naturally more keyboard-driven, despite a lot of great guitar licks. This album has some rocking moments and makes for a pleasant listening.
It would be nice to see how Derek would fit today's Dream Theater - there was definitely a lot of chemistry on the When Dream and Day Reunite show in LA earlier this year - but it's really hard to imagine the Theater without Jordan right now. I guess things are the way they should be. And there's always A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity aswell as Once in a Livetime...
